Asparagus Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS asparagus market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Asparagus Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, asparagus production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 7.7%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest asparagus producing country in ECOWAS, accounting for 50% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), threefold. Senegal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

In Nigeria, asparagus production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+2.3% per year) and Senegal (+2.0% per year).

Asparagus Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas shipments of asparagus decreased by -6.6% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 580%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 591%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Nigeria dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the asparagus exports, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+18.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+65 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +22.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 1.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-4.4%).

Asparagus Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of asparagus were imported in ECOWAS; waning by -32% on 2021. Overall, imports showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 117%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 116%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of asparagus imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together resulting at 85% of total import. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), mixing up a 7.8% share of total imports. Cabo Verde (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +56.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 76% of total imports. Senegal and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +48.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 282% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
