The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 31%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X units of babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) were exported in ECOWAS; surging by 57% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 118%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, baby garment exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 292% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Benin dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X units) and Ghana (X units). All these countries together held approx. 19% share of total exports. Togo (X units) and Nigeria (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) exports, with a CAGR of +98.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Niger (-2.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (-11.6%), Ghana (-13.3%) and Togo (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Benin (+70 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -16.1%, -19.4% and -29.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Benin ($X) emerged as the largest baby garment supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 10% share.
In Benin, baby garment exports expanded at an average annual rate of +35.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+14.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-13.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -59.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 101%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Baby Garment Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
Baby garment imports soared to X units in 2022, with an increase of 41% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, baby garment imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Senegal (X units) and Nigeria (X units) dominates imports structure, together mixing up 75% of total imports. Benin (X units) held a 6.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.9%). The following importers - Mali (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - each finished at a 5.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +35.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) in ECOWAS, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Mali, with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +28.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+21.6% per year) and Mali (+11.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -45.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 220% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
