Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, shipments abroad of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets decreased by -13% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, electric board, desk and panel exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) represented the major exporter of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets in ECOWAS, committing 88% of total export. It was distantly followed by Mali (X units), constituting a 6.9% share of total exports. Nigeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +31.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 65% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +34.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -21.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 94%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

Electric board, desk and panel imports dropped dramatically to X units in 2021, declining by -27.1% on 2020 figures. In general, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, electric board, desk and panel imports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Sierra Leone (X units), Guinea (X units), Senegal (X units) and Mali (X units) represented the key importers of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets, together constituting 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +27.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest electric board, desk and panel importing markets in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports. Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
