The ECOWAS bone glue and gelatin market declined modestly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 33%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of bone glues and gelatin were finally on the rise to reach X kg for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports saw a notable increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bone glue and gelatin exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, accounting for X kg, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg) and Togo (X kg), together achieving a 14% share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bone glues and gelatin exports, with a CAGR of +15.5% from 2012 to 2022. Togo (-11.5%) and Nigeria (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+60 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Togo and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -18.2% and -38.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest bone glue and gelatin supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 4.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-12.3% per year) and Togo (-29.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 63% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 114%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of bone glues and gelatin decreased by -16.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +14.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, bone glue and gelatin imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importer of bone glues and gelatin in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Senegal (10%) and Mali (4.7%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+26.9%), Mali (+21.7%) and Ghana (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Senegal (+8.9 p.p.), Ghana (+5.4 p.p.) and Mali (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -8.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bone glues and gelatin in ECOWAS, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 9.3% share.

In Nigeria, bone glue and gelatin imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+11.3% per year) and Senegal (+23.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
