The ECOWAS breathing appliances market rose modestly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Breathing Appliances Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, breathing appliances production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X units of breathing appliances and gas masks were exported in ECOWAS; with a decrease of -44.4% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 266% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, breathing appliances exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X units) and Nigeria (X units) were the largest exporters of breathing appliances and gas masks in ECOWAS, together creating 67% of total exports. Burkina Faso (X units) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.2%). The following exporters - Ghana (X units), Liberia (X units) and Togo (X units) - together made up 9.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +39.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest breathing appliances supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 15% share.

In Senegal, breathing appliances exports expanded at an average annual rate of +36.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (+4.2% per year) and Nigeria (+3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+10.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Breathing Appliances Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

Breathing appliances imports dropped remarkably to X units in 2022, shrinking by -16.8% on 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 601% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, breathing appliances imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 410% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units) represented the main importer of breathing appliances and gas masks, achieving 59% of total imports. Senegal (X units) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (7.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (6.4%) and Niger (5.9%). Burkina Faso (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+21.3%), Senegal (+19.7%), Niger (+12.1%), Burkina Faso (+11.4%) and Ghana (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cabo Verde emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Senegal and Cabo Verde increased by +13, +7.1 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported breathing appliances and gas masks in ECOWAS, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.6% share.

In Nigeria, breathing appliances imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+5.4% per year) and Senegal (+10.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
