Brewing Dregs Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS brewing dregs market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, exports of brewing or distilling dregs and waste in ECOWAS dropped rapidly to X tons, waning by -16.8% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33,402% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 18,222%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 99.9% of total exports in 2022.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the brewing or distilling dregs and waste exports, with a CAGR of +79.1% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +20 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the largest brewing dregs supplier in ECOWAS.

In Nigeria, brewing dregs exports expanded at an average annual rate of +63.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Nigeria amounted to -8.7% per year.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of brewing or distilling dregs and waste was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brewing dregs imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 147%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 70% of total imports. Niger (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took near 30% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the brewing or distilling dregs and waste imports, with a CAGR of +14.1% from 2012 to 2022. Senegal (-7.1%) and Niger (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+52 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-9.1 p.p.) and Niger (-39.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brewing or distilling dregs and waste in ECOWAS, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.

In Nigeria, brewing dregs imports increased at an average annual rate of +17.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Niger (-13.5% per year) and Senegal (-6.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -12.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 61%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
