The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Mali was the largest importer of broad beans and horse beans (dry) in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 42% of total imports in 2022. Liberia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Guinea (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each finished at an 11% share of total imports.

Imports into Mali increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+73.7%), Guinea (+32.4%), Nigeria (+24.7%), Ghana (+24.5%), Senegal (+12.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +73.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Liberia (+18 p.p.), Guinea (+12 p.p.), Mali (+8 p.p.), Nigeria (+4.1 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest broad bean and horse bean importing markets in ECOWAS were Mali ($X), Liberia ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Liberia, with a CAGR of +69.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (-2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
