In 2022, the amount of brooms, brushes, and mops exported in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X units, picking up by 694% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports posted a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, broom, brush, and mop exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), making up a 4.9% share of total exports. Togo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the brooms, brushes, and mops exports, with a CAGR of +64.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Nigeria (+88 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Togo and Ghana saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -20.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Togo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +30.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -90.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 69%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, purchases abroad of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 1% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Ghana was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 38% of total imports. Nigeria (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (10%), Guinea (9.9%), Senegal (8.5%), Sierra Leone (6.6%) and Gambia (5.5%).
Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Gambia (+27.1%), Sierra Leone (+10.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.5%) and Senegal (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2022. Guinea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+6.7 p.p.), Gambia (+4.7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.1 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guinea and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -5.1% and -10.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brooms, brushes, and mops in ECOWAS, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana stood at +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-0.9% per year) and Senegal (+7.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, declining by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
