Buckwheat Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS buckwheat market soared to $X in 2022, growing by 31% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed significant growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Buckwheat Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, buckwheat production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +16.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32%. The level of production peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Niger (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together comprising 81% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Buckwheat Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of buckwheat increased by 2,184% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 4,551% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, buckwheat exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,696%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger was the main exporter of buckwheat in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Niger experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of buckwheat. At the same time, Nigeria (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-36.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Niger (+88 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -62.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest buckwheat supplying countries in ECOWAS were Burkina Faso ($X), Niger ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -73.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 1,050% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+8.5%).

Buckwheat Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

Buckwheat imports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 39% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,098%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 3,802%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) represented the main importer of buckwheat in ECOWAS, achieving 98% of total import.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the buckwheat imports, with a CAGR of +88.4% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Nigeria (+95 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported buckwheat in ECOWAS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +61.3%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 226%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.
