Cabbage Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS cabbage market rose rapidly to $X in 2022, increasing by 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Cabbage Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, cabbage production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of cabbage production was Niger (X tons), comprising approx. 68% of total volume. Moreover, cabbage production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Senegal (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Niger stood at +14.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Senegal (+11.2% per year) and Mali (-1.1% per year).

In 2022, the average cabbage yield in ECOWAS totaled X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cabbage and other brassicas were harvested in ECOWAS; approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 35%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Cabbage Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

For the third year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in shipments abroad of cabbage and other brassicas, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 176%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, cabbage exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 167%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mali represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total exports.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cabbage and other brassicas exports, with a CAGR of +67.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Mali (+79 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-48.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest cabbage supplying countries in ECOWAS were Senegal ($X) and Mali ($X).

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +31.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.4%).

Cabbage Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, purchases abroad of cabbage and other brassicas was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, cabbage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cabo Verde (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons), Niger (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the key importers of cabbage and other brassicas, together constituting 87% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +80.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Niger ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 58% of total imports. Mali, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +77.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
