Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, shipments abroad of canary seed decreased by -99.8% to X kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 11,467% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, canary seed exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 14,277% against the previous year. Senegal dominates exports structure, amounting to X kg, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X kg) held a little share of total exports.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the canary seed exports, with a CAGR of -30.7% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (-45.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 106% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in ECOWAS
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of canary seed increased by 5.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 724%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canary seed imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 464% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2022. Cabo Verde (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the canary seed imports, with a CAGR of +47.4% from 2012 to 2022. Cabo Verde (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+53 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cabo Verde saw its share reduced by -46.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canary seed in ECOWAS, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cabo Verde ($X), with a 1.7% share of total imports.
