Carob Market Size in ECOWAS

After three years of growth, the ECOWAS carob market decreased by -86.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a deep reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Carob Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, carob production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -22.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Ghana (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), together comprising 95% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +10.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Carob Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

Carob exports surged to X tons in 2021, rising by 262% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 270%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, carob exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 51% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Niger (15%). Guinea (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Niger (with a CAGR of +2,482.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Niger ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Niger, with a CAGR of +1,896.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -20.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Carob Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of carob, when their volume decreased by -28.3% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 162% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, carob imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 123% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total imports in 2021.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carob imports, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Nigeria (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carob in ECOWAS.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +19.3%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -12.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Nigeria amounted to -1.4% per year.
