Carrot And Turnip Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS carrot and turnip market totaled $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Carrot And Turnip Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, carrot and turnip production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of carrot and turnip production, comprising approx. 69% of total volume. Moreover, carrot and turnip production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Senegal (X tons), with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Nigeria was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+12.4% per year) and Senegal (+11.8% per year).

In 2022, the average carrot and turnip yield in ECOWAS contracted slightly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 2.8%. Over the period under review, the carrot and turnip yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The carrot and turnip harvested area dropped to X ha in 2022, falling by -1.7% compared with the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 5.3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to carrot and turnip production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of carrots and turnips exported in ECOWAS shrank significantly to X tons, reducing by -51.7% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 231%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 252% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Mali (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carrots and turnips exports, with a CAGR of +50.8% from 2012 to 2022. Mali (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+64 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mali saw its share reduced by -52.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest carrot and turnip supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

In Senegal, carrot and turnip exports increased at an average annual rate of +61.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 49% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+7.4%).

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of carrots and turnips, when their volume decreased by -5.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 70%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, carrot and turnip imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 54%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Senegal represented the key importer of carrots and turnips in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons), together making up a 37% share of total imports. Mali (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carrot and turnip imports into Senegal stood at +11.4%. At the same time, Mali (+45.4%), Ghana (+38.0%), Cabo Verde (+14.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +45.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana and Mali increased by +6.8 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carrots and turnips in ECOWAS, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal amounted to +11.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+9.8% per year) and Ghana (+33.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) and Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
