In 2021, the ECOWAS market for cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap) increased by 10% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cationic surface-active agents (excl. soap) production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap) decreased by -92.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 754% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, cationic surface-active agents (excl. soap) exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,295% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the key exporter of cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap), generating 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap) exports, with a CAGR of +39.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+37.3%) and Mali (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo increased by +73, +2.6 and +1.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest cationic surface-active agents (excl. soap) supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +31.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+15.5% per year) and Senegal (-15.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 63%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

For the third year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in purchases abroad of cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap), which increased by 76% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 491% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cationic surface-active agents (excl. soap) imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 213%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Burkina Faso prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), constituting a 4.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each recorded a 4.3% share of total imports.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cationic surface-active agents (excluding soap) imports, with a CAGR of +160.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+29.2%), Ghana (+19.1%) and Nigeria (+15.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Burkina Faso increased by +88 percentage points.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 91% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +110.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
