Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, the amount of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures exported in ECOWAS shrank to X units, dropping by -7.8% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ceramic sanitary ware exports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 77%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ghana was the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 60% of total exports. Senegal (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together took near 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mali (X units), Togo (X units) and Benin (X units) - each resulted at a 6.3% share of total exports.
Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+21.4%), Nigeria (+17.5%), Benin (+11.4%), Mali (+11.4%) and Senegal (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +21.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+13 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal and Togo saw its share reduced by -4.2% and -9.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest ceramic sanitary ware supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana totaled +9.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+42.7% per year) and Nigeria (+18.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+17.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures decreased by -9.3% to X units in 2022. In general, imports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic sanitary ware imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures, namely Liberia, Ghana, Benin, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Nigeria, Cabo Verde, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Togo and Mali, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X), Benin ($X) and Liberia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 37% of total imports. Guinea-Bissau, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Nigeria, Mali and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 54%.
Guinea-Bissau, with a CAGR of +31.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, growing by 9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
