In 2022, imports of ceramic wares for laboratory or technical uses in ECOWAS dropped rapidly to X tons, with a decrease of -28.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 222% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of ceramic wares for laboratory or technical uses totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 111%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the key importer of ceramic wares for laboratory or technical uses in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (10%), Mali (8.6%), Gambia (6.7%) and Burkina Faso (4.8%). Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ceramic wares for laboratory or technical uses imports into Nigeria stood at -1.6%. At the same time, Gambia (+37.5%), Guinea (+30.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+28.0%) and Burkina Faso (+15.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-4.3%) and Mali (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+9.2 p.p.), Gambia (+6.4 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3.7 p.p.) and Guinea (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-6.5 p.p.), Ghana (-6.8 p.p.) and Mali (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Mali, Gambia, Burkina Faso and Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Gambia, with a CAGR of +26.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 53% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 68%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
