In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of chain and parts thereof of copper, when their volume decreased by -98.9% to X kg. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,267% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, copper chain exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 4,770%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Burkina Faso (X kg) represented the key exporter of chain and parts thereof of copper in ECOWAS, achieving 100% of total export.
Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chain and parts thereof of copper. Burkina Faso (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In Burkina Faso, copper chain exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -88.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed strong growth. As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Burkina Faso.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, supplies from abroad of chain and parts thereof of copper was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, copper chain imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 186%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of copper chain imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together accounting for 83% of total import. Burkina Faso (X kg) took a 7.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (5.2%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +24.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 78% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +13.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -22.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 64%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+16.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
