In value terms, non-electric chainsaw production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 7,155% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, shipments abroad of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor decreased by -0.2% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 880%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1,097% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Ghana (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor exports, with a CAGR of +52.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Togo (+77 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-39.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest non-electric chainsaw supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Togo amounted to +49.1%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Ghana stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-0.8%).

In 2022, purchases abroad of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor decreased by -69.6% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 733%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 380%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units) was the key importer of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor, constituting 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), committing a 20% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Liberia (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+43.4%), Ghana (+14.2%) and Liberia (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cabo Verde emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +43.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Ghana (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Liberia (-2.9 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-12.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor in ECOWAS, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 3.9% share.

In Nigeria, non-electric chainsaw imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+3.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-5.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
