Chicken Meat Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2021, the ECOWAS chicken meat market decreased by -3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chicken Meat Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, chicken meat production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Nigeria (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), with a combined 64% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average chicken meat yield in ECOWAS reached X kg per X heads, approximately mirroring 2020 figures. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chicken meat yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in ECOWAS expanded to X heads, increasing by 1.6% compared with the previous year. This number increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Chicken Meat Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X tons of chicken meat were exported in ECOWAS; picking up by 11% compared with 2020. In general, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 91%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chicken meat exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Benin (X tons) represented the key exporter of chicken meat in ECOWAS, creating 98% of total export.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chicken meat exports, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Benin increased by +19 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Benin ($X) also remains the largest chicken meat supplier in ECOWAS.

In Benin, chicken meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +19.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Benin.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Benin amounted to -1.2% per year.

Chicken Meat Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of chicken meat decreased by -23.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, chicken meat imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the main importer of chicken meat in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 42% of total imports in 2021. Benin (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Gambia (11%), Guinea (8.2%), Liberia (7.5%) and Sierra Leone (4.8%). Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chicken meat. At the same time, Gambia (+20.0%), Guinea (+18.2%), Togo (+6.2%) and Liberia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. Sierra Leone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Benin (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Gambia (+8.4 p.p.) and Guinea (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-3.6 p.p.) and Benin (-15.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken meat in ECOWAS, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Gambia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled -2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (-8.8% per year) and Gambia (+17.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
