Cigars And Cigarillos Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS cigars and cigarillos market declined slightly to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, exports of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos in ECOWAS rose sharply to X tons, surging by 9.5% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 848%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 534%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X kg) was the main exporter of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, committing 48% of total exports. Sierra Leone (X kg) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X kg), Nigeria (X kg) and Togo (X kg). All these countries together took near 47% share of total exports. Niger (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Senegal decreased at an average annual rate of -10.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+17.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-6.6%), Sierra Leone (-12.3%), Togo (-15.3%) and Nigeria (-30.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+26 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+18 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+8.2 p.p.), Niger (+4.2 p.p.) and Togo (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-40.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest cigars and cigarillos supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal amounted to -8.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (-9.8% per year) and Burkina Faso (-9.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos export price increased by +56.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -20.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 318% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 106%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2022. Liberia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 11% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +22.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+30.6%), Liberia (+24.8%) and Ghana (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +30.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Benin (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+55 p.p.) and Liberia (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Benin (-15.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cigars, cheroots and cigarillos in ECOWAS, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Liberia ($X), with a 6.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Mali, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire stood at +15.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Liberia (+8.9% per year) and Mali (+36.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
