After three years of growth, overseas shipments of citrus fruit jams, marmalades, jellies, purees or pastes decreased by -48.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,057%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, citrus fruit jams and marmalades exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 1,346%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) - each amounted to a 4.4% share of total exports.
Exports from Senegal decreased at an average annual rate of -20.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+96 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -5.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest citrus fruit jams and marmalades supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at -27.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sierra Leone (-0.7% per year) and Nigeria (-17.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X tons of citrus fruit jams, marmalades, jellies, purees or pastes were imported in ECOWAS; growing by 6.4% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 96%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, citrus fruit jams and marmalades imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) were the main importers of citrus fruit jams, marmalades, jellies, purees or pastes, together constituting 85% of total imports. Gambia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
Among the main importing countries, Liberia, with a CAGR of +18.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
