In 2022, overseas shipments of citrus fruits not elsewhere classified were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Benin (6.6%). The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Mali ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 79% of total exports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +21.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 87%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Citrus Fruits Not Elsewhere Classified
Imports in ECOWAS
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of citrus fruits not elsewhere classified decreased by -11.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 382%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 279%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports, with a CAGR of +71.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+30.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+79 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal saw its share reduced by -4.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported citrus fruits not elsewhere classified in ECOWAS, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports.
In Nigeria, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports expanded at an average annual rate of +68.0% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 78% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
