Helicopter Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS helicopter market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +38.8% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, helicopter production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 285%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, exports of civil helicopters in ECOWAS rose to X units, growing by 3% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 2,717% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, helicopter exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 223% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 78% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Guinea (X units). All these countries together held near 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ghana (X units) and Liberia (X units) - each finished at a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to helicopter exports from Nigeria stood at -7.4%. At the same time, Guinea (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012-2022. Liberia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.5%) and Ghana (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+4.8 p.p.) and Guinea (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest helicopter supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 2.5% share.

In Nigeria, helicopter exports expanded at an average annual rate of +15.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (-7.2% per year) and Guinea (+3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 4,220%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+25.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Helicopter Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X units of civil helicopters were imported in ECOWAS; increasing by 149% against 2021 figures. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, helicopter imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 618% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 43% of total imports. Niger (X units) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (16%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.6%). The following importers - Senegal (X units), Mali (X units) and Togo (X units) - together made up 8.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +621.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest helicopter importing markets in ECOWAS were Niger ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.

Niger, with a CAGR of +85.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -28.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 331%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+2,960.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
