The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, imports of clays for construction and industrial use reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 50% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Togo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each recorded a 3.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to clays for construction and industrial use imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +23.7%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+32.1%), Togo (+26.6%), Ghana (+8.4%) and Senegal (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo increased by +41, +12, +5.9 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported clays for construction and industrial use in ECOWAS, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +25.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+8.5% per year) and Nigeria (-10.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 74%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
