The ECOWAS common pottery market totaled $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, consumption showed a deep slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of common pottery were exported in ECOWAS; growing by 15% against the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, common pottery exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 189% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together resulting at 76% of total export. Mali (X tons) held an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.9%). The following exporters - Benin (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each recorded a 5.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +54.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest common pottery supplying countries in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports. Mali, Senegal, Benin and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +36.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -21.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 137% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas purchases of common pottery decreased by -18.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 72%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the largest importer of common pottery, making up 40% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Ghana (14%), Benin (9.2%) and Senegal (6.2%). The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to common pottery imports into Nigeria stood at -27.6%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+14.9%) and Benin (+13.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2022. Cabo Verde experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Senegal (-8.2%), Ghana (-8.9%) and Burkina Faso (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+15 p.p.), Ghana (+11 p.p.), Benin (+9 p.p.), Senegal (+4.9 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+3.3 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-52.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +14.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, common pottery import price increased by +59.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
