Exports in ECOWAS

For the third consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded decline in shipments abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof, which decreased by -1.8% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria was the major exporter of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total exports. Togo (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to computing machinery exports from Nigeria stood at -7.1%. At the same time, Gambia (+27.5%) and Senegal (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012-2021. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-8.5%), Togo (-10.0%) and Ghana (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire and Gambia increased by +13, +5.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 62% of total exports. Sierra Leone, Ghana, Togo and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +25.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Computing Machinery Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 312%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importer of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (5.6%). The following importers - Senegal (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -12.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+2.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-1.1%) and Ghana (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+6.4 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.6 p.p.), Senegal (+2.3 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-17.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 190%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
