Export Prices by Country
In 2020, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 193%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+63.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, supplies from abroad of continuous and discontinuous totalisers decreased by -68.7% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 201% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
In value terms, totaliser imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 347% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 76% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X units), mixing up a 6.7% share of total imports. Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Guinea (X units), Senegal (X units) and Gambia (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the continuous and discontinuous totalisers imports, with a CAGR of +67.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+53.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+16.7%), Senegal (+15.7%), Gambia (+14.9%), Ghana (+13.7%) and Guinea (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Nigeria (+69 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Gambia (-2.6 p.p.), Senegal (-2.9 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (-4.7 p.p.), Guinea (-7.4 p.p.) and Ghana (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported continuous and discontinuous totalisers in ECOWAS, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 1.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +65.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+26.0% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+11.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, declining by -9.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, totaliser import price decreased by -19.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
