The ECOWAS cucumber and gherkin market totaled $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 76%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of cucumber and gherkin production was Mali (X tons), comprising approx. 79% of total volume. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin production in Mali exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Mali amounted to +21.2%.

In 2022, the average yield of cucumbers and gherkins in ECOWAS rose modestly to X tons per ha, surging by 2.8% on the previous year's figure. The yield indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin yield decreased by -2.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the cucumber and gherkin yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cucumber and gherkin harvested area expanded slightly to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cucumber and gherkin production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, shipments abroad of cucumbers and gherkins decreased by -69.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 4,664% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 4,164% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Benin (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) were the main exporters of cucumbers and gherkins in ECOWAS, together mixing up 61% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X kg), Niger (X kg) and Mali (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +60.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Benin ($X) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Benin stood at -1.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+9.3% per year) and Ghana (+6.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Cucumber And Gherkin Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, purchases abroad of cucumbers and gherkins was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cabo Verde (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) were the main importers of cucumbers and gherkins in ECOWAS, together finishing at near 64% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8.3%) and Senegal (6.1%). The following importers - Nigeria (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X), Liberia ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 71% of total imports. Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +55.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
