In 2021, approx. X units of cylinders for calendering were exported in ECOWAS; rising by 192% compared with 2020. In general, exports saw temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 223%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calendering cylinder exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw strong growth. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X units) held a 9.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Burkina Faso (7.5%).

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cylinders for calendering exports, with a CAGR of +51.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-21.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+78 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+7.5 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest calendering cylinder supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, calendering cylinder exports expanded at an average annual rate of +66.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (+17.0% per year) and Ghana (+6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, rising by 47% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 144%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+49.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X units of cylinders for calendering were imported in ECOWAS; waning by -42% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 473%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, calendering cylinder imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 248%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 92% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Ghana (X units) and Gambia (X units) - each finished at a 3.7% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cylinders for calendering imports, with a CAGR of +54.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Gambia (+17.6%) and Ghana (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria increased by +66 percentage points.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cylinders for calendering in ECOWAS, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +44.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+1.1% per year) and Gambia (+17.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
