Unroasted Decaffeinated Coffee Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the ECOWAS unroasted decaffeinated coffee market, when its value decreased by -9.6% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Unroasted Decaffeinated Coffee Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 72%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

For the seventh year in a row, ECOWAS recorded decline in shipments abroad of unroasted decaffeinated coffee, which decreased by -47.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 60%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 52%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the key exporter of unroasted decaffeinated coffee in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2021. Guinea (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Togo (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - each recorded a 5.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -24.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+80.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +80.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-10.2%), Togo (-16.0%), Guinea (-22.2%) and Ghana (-32.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sierra Leone (+10 p.p.), Togo (+8.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-6.5 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-12.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Guinea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total exports. These countries were followed by Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Ghana, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +63.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 59% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Unroasted Decaffeinated Coffee Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, imports of unroasted decaffeinated coffee in ECOWAS declined modestly to X tons, waning by -3.9% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +12.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports in 2021 were Gambia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together amounting to 94% of total import. Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +36.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unroasted decaffeinated coffee in ECOWAS, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal totaled +31.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+14.3% per year) and Nigeria (+2.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
