Medical reconstruction cements imports surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 48% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, medical reconstruction cements imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+62.3%), Mali (+28.4%), Cabo Verde (+10.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +62.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+19 p.p.) and Ghana (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -4.1% and -30.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Mali, Cote d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +55.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -35.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
