Senegal represented the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Niger (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Ghana (X units), together creating a 44% share of total exports.

Exports from Senegal decreased at an average annual rate of -17.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+28.3%), Niger (+8.5%) and Burkina Faso (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (+14 p.p.), Ghana (+4.6 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+4.3 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Senegal (-26.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 73% of total exports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 240%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 120%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
