Market Size for Dog And Cat Food in ECOWAS

After six years of growth, the ECOWAS dog and cat food market decreased by -7.8% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +65.8% against 2014 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Production of Dog And Cat Food in ECOWAS

In value terms, dog and cat food production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.7% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports of Dog And Cat Food

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, the amount of dog and cat food exported in ECOWAS soared to X tons, increasing by 15% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 80%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dog and cat food exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 65% of total exports. Niger (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (8.6%). The following exporters - Liberia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Niger (+51.7%), Ghana (+46.6%) and Liberia (+42.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Togo (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal, Niger, Liberia and Ghana increased by +20, +20, +2.6 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest dog and cat food supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 7% share.

In Senegal, dog and cat food exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-13.2% per year) and Niger (+25.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 92% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Dog And Cat Food

Imports in ECOWAS

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of dog and cat food decreased by -16.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, dog and cat food imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importer of dog and cat food in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (12%), Senegal (8.1%), Cabo Verde (6.3%) and Benin (5.8%). Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dog and cat food imports into Nigeria stood at +11.2%. At the same time, Benin (+18.2%), Senegal (+14.2%), Cabo Verde (+14.2%), Togo (+11.3%), Ghana (+4.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Benin, Senegal and Cabo Verde increased by +6.7, +2.9, +2.6 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dog and cat food in ECOWAS, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +6.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+1.0% per year) and Ghana (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
