Dried Onion Market Size in ECOWAS
The ECOWAS dried onion market declined dramatically to $X in 2021, which is down by -15.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Dried Onion Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, dried onion production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -7.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 38%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Dried Onion Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, overseas shipments of dried onions increased by 111% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, exports posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 537%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dried onion exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mali represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 72% of total exports. Niger (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (4.6%). Senegal (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried onion exports from Mali stood at +24.9%. At the same time, Niger (+57.1%) and Senegal (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +57.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mali (+57 p.p.) and Niger (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-76 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Niger ($X) emerged as the largest dried onion supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Niger totaled +51.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mali (+26.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-23.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -14% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 96% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Dried Onion Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of dried onions, when their volume decreased by -33% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 382% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, dried onion imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 87%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the key importer of dried onions, constituting 78% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (8.8%).
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried onions imports, with a CAGR of +23.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+44 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -4.5% and -36.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 98% of total imports.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +6.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, faced a deep downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
