Dried Prune Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2022, the ECOWAS dried prune market decreased by -0.7% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas shipments of dried prunes increased by 229% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dried prune exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 3,234%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 56% of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Benin (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 40% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of dried prunes. At the same time, Benin (+74.1%) and Nigeria (+44.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +74.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Benin increased by +56, +19 and +12 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) emerged as the largest dried prune supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 6.9% share.

In Burkina Faso, dried prune exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Benin (+128.0% per year) and Nigeria (+27.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 202% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 6,889%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+30.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Dried Prune Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of dried prunes, when their volume decreased by -5.1% to X tons. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +11.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 30%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, dried prune imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cabo Verde (X tons) represented the key importer of dried prunes, making up 51% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together creating a 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Niger (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried prune imports into Cabo Verde stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Benin (+40.6%), Niger (+12.8%), Senegal (+11.4%) and Ghana (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +40.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.6%) and Nigeria (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cabo Verde (+6.8 p.p.), Senegal (+6.3 p.p.), Benin (+6.3 p.p.) and Niger (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-8 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-13.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried prunes in ECOWAS, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 10% share.

In Cabo Verde, dried prune imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+9.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
