Market Size for Duck and Goose Meat in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS duck and goose meat market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -9.7% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Production of Duck and Goose Meat in ECOWAS

In value terms, duck and goose meat production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Sierra Leone (X tons) remains the largest duck and goose meat producing country in ECOWAS, comprising approx. 85% of total volume. Moreover, duck and goose meat production in Sierra Leone exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Liberia (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Sierra Leone amounted to +5.7%.

The average duck and goose meat yield dropped modestly to X kg per head in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 0.8%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

The global number of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production fell sharply to X heads in 2022, which is down by -15.4% on the previous year. The total number of producing animals indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, number of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production increased by +45.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the number of producing animals increased by 45%. As a result, the number of producing animals attained the peak level of X heads, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports of Duck and Goose Meat

Exports in ECOWAS

For the fourth year in a row, ECOWAS recorded decline in shipments abroad of duck and goose meat, which decreased by -40.7% to X kg in 2022. Overall, exports faced a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 673%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Benin (X kg) was the key exporter of duck and goose meat in ECOWAS, mixing up 100% of total export.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the duck and goose meat exports, with a CAGR of -10.7% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Benin (+100 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Benin ($X) also remains the largest duck and goose meat supplier in ECOWAS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Benin stood at +1.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 53% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 173%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Benin.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Benin amounted to +13.4% per year.

Imports of Duck and Goose Meat

Imports in ECOWAS

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of duck and goose meat increased by 17% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 102%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Liberia (X tons) and Togo (X tons) represented the key importers of duck and goose meat in 2022, accounting for approx. 39% and 28% of total imports, respectively. Cabo Verde (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Guinea (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Benin (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +31.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest duck and goose meat importing markets in ECOWAS were Togo ($X), Mali ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +25.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -26.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, duck and goose meat import price increased by +24.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 63%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
