Eggplant Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS eggplant market totaled $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.1% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Eggplant Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, eggplant production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), with a combined 90% share of total production. Niger and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.9%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average eggplant yield in ECOWAS reached X tons per ha, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the eggplant harvested area in ECOWAS was estimated at X ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant harvested area decreased by -0.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 14%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of eggplants (aubergines) exported in ECOWAS soared to X tons, growing by 22% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 190% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 204%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso was the main exporter of eggplants (aubergines) in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2022. Guinea (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (14%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant exports from Burkina Faso stood at +39.3%. At the same time, Senegal (+43.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Guinea (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Burkina Faso (+62 p.p.) and Senegal (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Guinea (-66 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In Burkina Faso, eggplant exports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guinea (-10.7% per year) and Senegal (+42.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -26.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Eggplant Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

For the fourth consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded growth in overseas purchases of eggplants (aubergines), which increased by 123% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, eggplant imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Niger was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 66% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cabo Verde (5.3%).

Niger was also the fastest-growing in terms of the eggplants (aubergines) imports, with a CAGR of +99.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+12.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Niger (+65 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cabo Verde and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -8.3% and -54.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Niger ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported eggplants (aubergines) in ECOWAS, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Niger totaled +114.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6% per year) and Cabo Verde (+23.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant import price increased by +90.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
