Exports in ECOWAS

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions increased by 37% to X units in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 350% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calculator exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the main exporter of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 40% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Sierra Leone (X units), Liberia (X units) and Gambia (X units). All these countries together held near 48% share of total exports. Senegal (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest calculator supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Liberia ($X), with a 7.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 7.1% share.

In Ghana, calculator exports increased at an average annual rate of +27.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Liberia (+38.6% per year) and Togo (-7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 1,981%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+30.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions, when their volume decreased by -25.9% to X units. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 85%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, calculator imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the main importer of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Gambia (X units), Guinea (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Nigeria (X units), together making up a 44% share of total imports. Liberia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions imports, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+13.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+10.6%) and Sierra Leone (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Gambia (-10.2%), Liberia (-10.7%) and Nigeria (-22.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+37 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+13 p.p.), Guinea (+4.4 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Liberia (-4.8 p.p.), Gambia (-10.2 p.p.) and Nigeria (-36.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest calculator importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia, which together accounted for a further 14%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -21.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
