In 2021, the amount of erasers of vulcanised rubber exported in ECOWAS soared to X tons, growing by 435% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Liberia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Togo (X kg), generating a 7.2% share of total exports. Ghana (X kg), Sierra Leone (X kg) and Guinea (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Liberia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of erasers of vulcanised rubber. At the same time, Guinea (+49.4%), Sierra Leone (+48.2%) and Togo (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +49.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Liberia (+82 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+3.2 p.p.) and Guinea (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-78.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Liberia ($X) emerged as the largest vulcanised rubber erases supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Liberia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+12.8% per year) and Togo (+17.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 76% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted notable growth. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+37.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of erasers of vulcanised rubber increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 167%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vulcanised rubber erases imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 237% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importer of erasers of vulcanised rubber in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 52% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Togo (4.9%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Benin (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Guinea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total imports. Senegal, Togo, Benin and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Benin, with a CAGR of +36.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 33% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
