Ethanol Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS ethanol market stood at $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -7.0% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethanol production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 59%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, ethanol exports in ECOWAS fell modestly to X litres, waning by -3.8% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 46%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol exports expanded to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X litres), distantly followed by Togo (X litres), Senegal (X litres), Nigeria (X litres), Burkina Faso (X litres) and Mali (X litres) represented the main exporters of ethyl alcohol, together constituting 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest ethanol supplying countries in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Togo ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +46.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per litre), while Burkina Faso ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Ethanol Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -6.2% to X litres in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 43%. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, ethanol imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X litres) was the main importer of ethyl alcohol, making up 56% of total imports. Ghana (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X litres). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Togo (X litres), Sierra Leone (X litres) and Liberia (X litres) - together made up 7.7% of total imports.

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of ethyl alcohol. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+14.6%), Ghana (+10.3%), Liberia (+5.0%), Togo (+2.7%) and Sierra Leone (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +12 and +7.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ethyl alcohol in ECOWAS, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+4.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per litre, growing by 8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
