Grape Market Size in ECOWAS
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the ECOWAS grape market, when its value decreased by -12% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Grape Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, grape production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 5,068% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Burkina Faso (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.
In Burkina Faso, grape production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2022.
Grape Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of grapes, when their volume increased by 4.1% to X tons. Overall, exports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 1,873% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, grape exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1,890%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Burkina Faso represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together creating a 25% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapes exports, with a CAGR of +35.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+24.0%) and Senegal (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burkina Faso (+63 p.p.), Benin (+6.6 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -45.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Burkina Faso totaled +35.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Benin (+35.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-7.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 56%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Grape Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, supplies from abroad of grapes decreased by -9.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, grape imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of grapes in ECOWAS, creating 68% of total import. Mali (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Burkina Faso (6.7%) and Cabo Verde (5.4%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Mali ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 52% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +33.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
