Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of gravel, pebbles and crushed stone for concrete and road aggregates, when their volume decreased by -77.2% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,335%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of gravel, pebbles and crushed stone for concrete and road aggregates reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 560%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Gambia represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 63% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guinea-Bissau (X tons), achieving a 26% share of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total imports.

Imports into Gambia increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+29.9%) and Guinea (+14.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +29.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guinea-Bissau (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Gambia (+15 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Guinea-Bissau (-13.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Gambia ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Guinea-Bissau ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 63% of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +30.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 61% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 662%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
