From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, shipments abroad of gypsum and anhydrite decreased by -13.2% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 202%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 354% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Benin was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), comprising a 35% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Benin (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Benin ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Benin, with a CAGR of 0.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -15.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+10.2%).

Gypsum And Anhydrite Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of gypsum and anhydrite, when their volume decreased by -3.2% to X tons. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest importer of gypsum and anhydrite in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 34% of total imports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (11%), Benin (11%), Togo (8.9%), Burkina Faso (8.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (8%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum and anhydrite imports into Nigeria stood at +7.9%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+25.5%), Senegal (+20.6%), Togo (+8.8%), Benin (+7.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+8.2 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+6.3 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-3.1 p.p.) and Ghana (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum and anhydrite in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Benin, with a 5.8% share.

In Nigeria, gypsum and anhydrite imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-1.3% per year) and Benin (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 39% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, gypsum and anhydrite import price increased by +110.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 44%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
