Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hair, shaving and toilet brush exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), creating a 28% share of total exports. Togo (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of hair brushes and shaving and toilet brushes for personal use. At the same time, Nigeria (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-22.0%) and Togo (-26.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Togo ($X per unit) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) and Ghana ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, purchases abroad of hair brushes and shaving and toilet brushes for personal use decreased by -0.9% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -1.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +81.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 62% of total imports. Guinea (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together took near 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) - together made up 8.3% of total imports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hair brushes and shaving and toilet brushes for personal use imports, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+16.3%) and Sierra Leone (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cabo Verde (-3.0%), Senegal (-4.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (-6.9%) and Nigeria (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest hair, shaving and toilet brush importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 77% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +21.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
