Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X units of hand or foot-operated air pumps were exported in ECOWAS; falling by -9.4% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 959%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand-operated air pump exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 546% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units) and Nigeria (X units), together generating a 42% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mali (X units), Togo (X units) and Liberia (X units) - together made up 9.8% of total exports.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +32.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+56.3%) and Liberia (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +56.3% from 2012-2022. Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Senegal (-2.6%), Nigeria (-16.0%) and Mali (-29.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Togo and Liberia increased by +45, +18, +5.8, +2.1 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest hand-operated air pump supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire stood at +59.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (-5.2% per year) and Ghana (-3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 26% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 221%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of hand or foot-operated air pumps decreased by -14.9% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 267% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, hand-operated air pump imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 129%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), comprising a 5.6% share of total imports. Guinea (X units) and Nigeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand or foot-operated air pumps imports, with a CAGR of +43.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Guinea (-2.6%) and Nigeria (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+75 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -3%, -13.5% and -19.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hand or foot-operated air pumps in ECOWAS, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 4.7% share.

In Ghana, hand-operated air pump imports increased at an average annual rate of +26.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+10.5% per year) and Nigeria (-3.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
