Nigeria represented the largest exporter of hats and other headgear in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Niger (X units), constituting a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X units), Ghana (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) - together made up 9.3% of total exports.
Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +42.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+74.7%), Senegal (+18.7%), Ghana (+11.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +74.7% from 2012-2022. Nigeria (+37 p.p.) and Niger (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana saw its share reduced by -8.9%, -11.8% and -16.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest hat and headgear supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +31.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+6.4% per year) and Senegal (+3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -47.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 53%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of hats and other headgear imported in ECOWAS soared to X units, increasing by 157% on 2021. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hat and headgear imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -26.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Togo (X units), Senegal (X units), Ghana (X units) and Guinea (X units) represented the main importers of hats and other headgear, together creating 85% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hats and other headgear in ECOWAS, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 12% share.
In Nigeria, hat and headgear imports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Togo (+3.0% per year) and Senegal (+24.9% per year).
