Niger (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, comprising approx. 55% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Togo (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ghana (X tons), with a 16% share.
In Niger, hazelnut production expanded at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+2.0% per year) and Ghana (+40.2% per year).

Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were exported in ECOWAS; picking up by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 41,727%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 8,160% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Niger (X tons) was the key exporter of hazelnuts, committing 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), constituting a 26% share of total exports.
Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of +50.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+314.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +314.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana increased by +26 percentage points.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) emerged as the largest hazelnut supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
In Ghana, hazelnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +740.1% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 199% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+102.7%).
Hazelnut Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, imports of hazelnuts in ECOWAS soared to X tons, rising by 30% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 717% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hazelnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 920%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Niger (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) was the key importer of hazelnuts in ECOWAS, creating 84% of total import. It was distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X kg), comprising a 6.8% share of total imports. Liberia (X kg), Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +74.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Niger ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in ECOWAS, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Niger totaled +70.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+59.1% per year) and Senegal (+29.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut import price increased by +39.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
