Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines) decreased by 0% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 267%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, heat pump exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 504% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Nigeria (X units), together reaching 100% of total export.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines) exports, with a CAGR of -7.4% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Nigeria (+80 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the largest heat pump supplier in ECOWAS.

In Nigeria, heat pump exports plunged by an average annual rate of -8.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 39% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 327%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Nigeria amounted to -1.2% per year.

Imports in ECOWAS

For the third consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded growth in overseas purchases of heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines), which increased by 326% to X units in 2021. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, heat pump imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X units) and Ghana (X units) prevails in imports structure, together achieving 89% of total imports. Senegal (X units), Guinea (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines) in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.6% share.

In Nigeria, heat pump imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+4.1% per year) and Senegal (-2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -51.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
