Hemp Tow Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS hemp tow market soared to $X in 2022, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, consumption enjoyed a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hemp Tow Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, hemp tow production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of hemp tow production was Nigeria (X tons), comprising approx. 66% of total volume. Moreover, hemp tow production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Gambia (X tons), twofold.

In Nigeria, hemp tow production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (+20.0% per year) and Benin (-11.0% per year).

Hemp Tow Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of hemp tow decreased by -99.7% to X kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports saw a perceptible curtailment. The smallest decline of -64.3% was in 2014. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, hemp tow exports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 12,765%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X kg) represented the main exporter of hemp tow in ECOWAS, constituting 100% of total export.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hemp tow exports, with a CAGR of +56.7% from 2012 to 2021. Senegal (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal totaled +68.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -43.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 580% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Senegal.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Senegal amounted to +7.6% per year.

Hemp Tow Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas purchases of hemp tow were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 214% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hemp tow imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 367%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), achieving a 6.3% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hemp tow imports, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012 to 2022. Niger experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Nigeria (+71 p.p.) and Niger (+6.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hemp tow in ECOWAS, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 2.5% share of total imports.

In Nigeria, hemp tow imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 164%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Niger stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-11.3%).
