In 2022, the amount of chicken eggs exported in ECOWAS totaled X tons, remaining constant against 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 602%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken egg exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 515% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chicken eggs exports, with a CAGR of +88.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Senegal (+97 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-54.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest chicken egg supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal amounted to +81.6%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 109%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.3%).
Chicken Egg Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, overseas purchases of chicken eggs decreased by -14% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, chicken egg imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of chicken egg imports in 2022 were Liberia (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together accounting for 74% of total import. Sierra Leone (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together took near 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea-Bissau (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - together made up 4.3% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Liberia (with a CAGR of +43.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken eggs in ECOWAS, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Gambia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Liberia, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal amounted to +24.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (+17.4% per year) and Liberia (+35.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
